Department of Transportation (DOT) and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Physical Exams

The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires those driving commercial vehicles to undergo a physical exam for their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). This checkup determines their fitness to drive and ensures their safety and the safety of others on the road. Commercial motor vehicle drivers must maintain an up-to-date Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC), Form MCSA-5876 to drive. Visit the DOT physical doctors at Boulevard Medical Healthcare in the Bronx, NY to receive your DOT physical exam.

Who Will Perform Your DOT/CDL Physical Exam?

To ensure the quality of each examination, your DOT physician must be listed on the national registry. Dr. Nauka Desai will perform the CDL/DOT physical examination at the Boulevard Medical Clinic in the Bronx. It is important to have your CDL medical examination form and other documentation such as an MCSA-5875 form, required when obtaining a CDL, before arriving at the doctor’s office. This will help prevent any delay in the processing of your application.

What Will Be Tested During the DOT/CDL Physical Exam?

  • General appearance/weight and posture
  • Head and eyes
  • Ears
  • Throat
  • Heart
  • Lungs
  • Abdomen/viscera
  • Genitals/rectum
  • Neurology
  • Spine/musculoskeletal
  • Extremities

Your DOT doctor may perform further testing if your DOT physical exam results and appearance indicate a possible underlying condition. For example, insulin-dependent diabetes is a disqualifying condition. The full list of DOT physical exam requirements and the medical examination report your doctor will use can be found here.

How Long Do DOT Certificates Last?

In general, DOT physical exam results are valid for 24 months. The doctor, however, may issue an examiner’s certificate for less in circumstances where a person’s condition needs to be monitored, for example, people with high blood pressure.
